6 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Personal Trainer

Updated: Sep 22, 2022

Whether you’re training to run a 5K race or wanting to build strength to boost longevity, choosing to work with a fitness professional is a big decision!

As a client, you want to make sure the personal trainer has the experience and professionalism to help you meet your goals. But not only that, you want to make sure the trainer’s personality and training style match your preferences.

With that in mind, here are a few questions to ask when speaking with a potential trainer.

Question #1 - How have you helped other women achieve goals similar to mine?

Ask specific questions about the plan your coach would provide to help you work towards your goals. Asking about others’ success stories is a great start!

Question #2 - How do you encourage/motivate your clients?

Although this will vary from person-to-person, understanding the coach’s personality and style of coaching will help you decide if you would work well together.

Question #3 - How do you promote injury prevention in your workout programs?

The coach will have thoughts about implementing a warm-up routine, post-workout stretching, the number of workout sessions per week, etc. as well as how to decrease the risk of injury while exercising.

Question #4 - How do you track progress over time?

How does the personal trainer plan to track the success of your training program? Whether it’s by regular fitness assessments, heart rate measurements, client feedback surveys, or a host of other methods, the coach should have a plan for tracking progress over time.

Question #5 - What is your training methodology?

Every trainer has a system or method for writing workout programs. Understanding the coach’s process, or the “why” behind the exercise choices, can help you decide if it’s the best fit for you.

Question #6 - What certification and prior training experience do you have?

Most trainers will have a certification from a reputable organization like The National Academy of Sports Medicine, The National Strength and Conditioning Association, or The American College of Sports Medicine.
